I think that I always see a new work of art in a kind of dumb and simplistic way, I just look at it and let it hit me as it is. You probably know what I'm talking about, but ~ what follows from such a cursory glance is the equally cursory "wow I lieks" or "eyuuuuw!" This one is definitely the former; I think it's got a lot to do with how you used the colors and what those colors are. Leaves at night, well, that's how they actually look when represented in this kind of painting, the colors are true. What stands out is the array of glowing golds. Oh yeah, I liek the song too!
This is a beautiful self portrait. I like the limitied colour palette. Cortin's glowing gold "lights" (don't know what else to call them) are breathtaking against all that blue. Another detail I love are the droplets of water clinging to the leaves. The silhouette of a city in the background is a nice touch as well... I think it adds a sense of foreboding. The image as a whole feels quiet and magical. Lovely work!
